I’m happy to announce that, as of last week, The University of Newcastle has qualified for the 2012 NI (National Instruments) Autonomous Robotics Competition (NI ARC).
I will be leading a team of 6 students from across the disciplines of electrical and computer engineering, including fellow NUbots team member Shannon Fenn, in a competition against teams from the following universities / tertiary colleges:
- Auckland University of Technology
- Charles Darwin University
- Curtin University
- Griffith University
- Macquarie University
- Massey University
- Queensland University of Technology
- Royal Melbourne Institute of Technology
- Swinburne University
- TAFE – Western Sydney
- University of Auckland
- University of Canterbury
- University of Newcastle
- University of South Australia
- University of Tasmania
- University of Technology Sydney
- University of Wollongong
- University of New South Wales
- Victorian University of Wellington
The aim of the competition is to develop an autonomous robot that is able to navigate a field of randomly placed obstacles in order to retrieve a number of uniquely coloured objects. Each of these objects is then to be returned to the correspondingly coloured platform. The fastest team to correctly complete the task wins!
To monitor the progress of our NI Autonomous Robotics Competition team (name to be decided – comment with suggestions), please check this website regularly. Unfortunately, I have had many external commitments lately (predominantly marketing work for the university and development of interim reports for my final year project), so the rate at which I’ve been writing articles is substantially lower than I’d planned. However, I guarantee that there are a lot of exciting developments regarding both the NUbots RoboCup project and NI ARC contest on the horizon, and I will be keeping you all informed every step of the way!

After reading this section of your Web site, I can understand why you would say, it is very exciting. Last year I followed the NUBots in the competition, held in Istanbul, Turkey. I am following the progress of the NUBots team as you all ready yourselfs for your next competition for 2012. So to now head a new group, is a wonderful Compliment and a Privilage to you, from up high at the University. If you are still looking for a name for a new journey in Robots, could I make a suggestion? My suggestion would be “Rainbow” I suggest this name as through all the stories over history and in Childrens Stories, the “Pot of Gold” has always been at the end of the rainbow. The Big Prize after carefully and succesfully achieving, yet another Dream. I wish you and your Group all the luck in the world.
Cheers, Lyn
Very interesting information!Perfect just what I was searching for!
